![]() ![]() This severely limits their trade flexibility around the deadline as it relates to going into the luxury tax for the 2017-2018 season. So to sum up, as a result of the Pelicans playing Omer Asik for 4 minutes in Feb 2017, as well as the fiasco that was the Boogie trade to NO, the Pelicans are really hamstrung by the luxury tax threshold around the trade deadline due to Asik not being able to be medically retired until 2 days after the trade deadline. For those who don't know, the NBA moved up the the trade deadline by a week this past off season, to make the deadline before the allstar game instead of after, largely as a result of the mess that was Boogie's trade to New Orleans in the first place. The NBA trade deadline for this year is Feb 8th, 2018. Of note, the cap relief that comes from a medical retirement cannot be traded, so if a team hypothetically traded for Asik at the deadline, the new team would be unable to receive any cap relief from Asik following his medical retirement. That means Asik is able to be medically retired come Feb 10th, 2018. Asik's last 3 games played were on Janu(5 mins), January 25th, 2017 (4 mins) and February 10th, 2017 (4 mins). A player is able to be medically retired on the 1st anniversary of his last regular season game (and not before). Now how does Asik play into this? Well, Asik is likely to be medically retired by the Pels. However, it's important to keep in mind that i doubt the Pelicans want to go into the Luxury tax this current year if Boogie is going to sign an extension as any extension he might sign would put the Pels clearly into the Luxury Tax again in 2018 as a repeat offender. With Boogie's future with the Pelicans in doubt, it would be reasonable to assume the Pelicans will be active at this years trade deadline. *note, the 2018 figures are the projected figures i could find, the 2017 are actual figures Now lets take a look at the projected Salary Cap and Luxury Tax Levels: Year Let's take a brief look at New Orlean's cap situation for the next years: Player Jrue's 5 year, $126M contract has left the Pelicans with almost zero flexibility going forward.
